Subjectmke2fs and bad sectors make 2.1.20+modutils-970104+awedrv-0.30 barf
I have an IDE hard disk with some bad sectors. I decided to run mke2fs
1.06 on it and unsurprisingly got many errors such as:

Jan 10 16:23:58 topside kernel: hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady
SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
Jan 10 16:23:58 topside kernel: hdc: read_intr: error=0x40 {
UncorrectableError
}, LBAsect=552754, sector=60787
Jan 10 16:23:58 topside kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 16:06, sector
60787
Jan 10 16:23:59 topside kernel: hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady
SeekComplete DataRequest Error }

After mke2fs had finished, I decided to start pppd 2.3, and got an oops.
When I tried it a second time, I got another oops:

# pppd
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address
000000d0

Also, several processes, including init, showed up as zombies on ps'
output, preventing a normal shutdown. Later, I formatted the drive under
DOS, which simply gave "trying to recover allocation unit" messages as it
marked off 40 bad sectors (I don't know how to mark off bad sectors under
Linux). Sorry for not disassembling the oops, but ksymoops segfaults for
me and my klogd didn't do the job because it is too old. I can update
klogd and duplicate the problem if it is of interest.

Hardware details:
