I'm not sure why I haven't seen anyone mention this mini-Howto thats available at
http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/mini/Visual-Bell
It goes into great detail about how to disable the beeps or change them into visual beeps for both the console and X11. I haven't tried Ingo's module but if it works it seems to be a very clean way to do it and perhaps something that could be added to the above mini-Howto.
