On the 1.2.13 ELF systems we have here, under heavy usage we get lock-ups here where the system stops responding to most things (it responds to pings, and X still moves the mouse and changes focus, but that's about all) and the console gets the following messages:
Couldn't get a free page IP queue glue - no memory for gluing queue
The first is a kmalloc failure, and the second is probably due to the first. Xosview still runs during this, and shows memory and swap as being OK but CPU pegged at 100% system. The only fix we've found is the reset button.
(I just got nailed by this - I was compiling a big application on a colleague's machine with 16meg, and he came back to his desk and started using the emacs and netscape that had been swapped out)
If anyone has suggestions other than "upgrade to 2.0.*", please let me know. (My machine is happy for now at 1.3.85; when I get the time and I'm convinced 2.0.* is stable I'll upgrage all the engineers here, but I'm not about to do it yet...)
BTW, I don't think it's the ld.so problem related to netscape, because I think we've seen this on machines where no one has been using netscape. I'm not sure about this, though. --
