Yes, Linux CAN read the NT filesystem, but the driver hasn't been released yet (waiting for v2.1).

There is a book "Inside the Windows NT file system" by Helen Custer, ISBN 1-55615-660-X , but it's not very good (not enough detail).
The driver works, quite well, but there is still a lot to do. If you want to help you could join the mailing list.
