I have helped alot of people through LISC (the Linux Internet Support Cooperative) to get ide cdrom's working ont he 2nd and 3rd ide channels. They have had problems because (as everyone knows :-) Linux doesn't auto probe those channels. when i was setitng up my CDrom drive (on ide3) i had difficulty finding the exact parameters (io port,etc), that the channels used by default. After grepping parts of the kernel source, and checking some other sources, i found the correct data. The file /usr/src/linux/Documentation/ide.txt contains references to the ide channels, and passing the parameter to the kernel, but the suggested values are incorrect (ie, do not contain the standard value for the ide channels). Thus i suggest that the following be added to the ide.txt file in order to reduce the stress of people trying to get an ide cdrom working on ide2 or ide3. Here is the diff:
