Subjecttroubles with umc8672 driver

I got your address out of the source code for the umc8672 (linux) driver.
I am having some troubles with the driver. When I attempt to switch to
32-bit mode (hdparm -c[13]) the driver starts producing error messages:

kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x75 { DriveReady DeviceFault SeekComplete CorrectedError Error }
kernel: hda: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }

These come very fast and the drive begins to churn. Here is a bit of my

hda: WDC AC31000H, 1033MB w/128kB Cache, LBA, CHS=2100/16/63
hdb: WDC AC2420H, 405MB w/128kB Cache, CHS=989/15/56

Linux version 2.0.10 (root@mellon) (gcc version 2.7.2) #1 Wed Jul 31 15:10:22 EDT 1996

I will be happy to send you any other configuration info you may need.
