I had this problem with 2.0.0 on my new Pentium, except I got the message after about 1 second of output when I would cat files to /dev/audio. I can't test any more, because I solved the problem by moving the SB16 card (back) to a 486 running 1.2.13, where it works fine.
The SB16 and the Pentium are PnP, the 486 is not.
