I run Linux on a p-75 with 16 meg of memory, a PCI mother board with dual IDE controlers, an Adaptec 1542 SCSI controler driving a Philips CDR. I have not had this problem since 1.3.37. Here's what happens:
With no multiple device support the system hangs early in the morning when the cron job runs that searches the disks. The result is the disk activity light is locked on (no disk activity is heard) and the machine is totally locked. No VC switching, no keyboard response, nothing. The only way to get the machine to reboot is to power down. When I had this problem with 1.3.37 it turned out that it couldn't handle the second controler properly and fragged the disk on the second controler.
I rebuilt the kernel with multiple device support enabled and the problem only got worse. The system hung after only a few disk accesses.
This doesn't happen in 2.0.7 at all.
Any ideas?
