I've got a new MB coming in that has two USB ports on it. Granted that nothing uses them at this moment, but its nice to have them there -- just in case the standard does take off.
I've been thinking it would be interesting to have /dev/usb for the hardware driver (assuming that its not compatible with the 16550A in which case it might be easier to extend the serial driver). Then the protocol itself might make more sense to be part of the networking suite. I think sockets would be a very easy way to talk to USB devices..
