I would suggest this technique (use any values from a preexisting partition table first, call HD_GETGEO second) be used for automatic determination.
No. The HD_GETGEO should always be done and if the geometry does not match the present partition table the user should be warned and asked for guidance. Silently ignoring the driver's translation is *never* a good idea.
