Yes, you are right, the distribution should remain as it is ( also for other reasons ).
However, having a little script cleaning up the tree _after_ make config (like I have it) make sense, because you then gain 5 Meg:
'du -s' on a full 2.0 tree: 23376 'du -s' on a i386-only tree: 18442
