I tried the following experiment a while ago (1.3.98)
1. Compile SMC Ultra as module.
2. Wait for Socket Destroy delayeds (overnight).
3. Close link and unload module.

The error messages _did_not_ stop when the driver was unloaded.
Note that at this point my machine was completely isolated from the
LAN, and the only active interface was the loopback (no traffic).
