this is a system crash that I could reproduce regardless of the kernel version, 1.2.x crashes as well as 1.3.x as well as 1.99.x actually it is not a crash, but corruption of ext2fs.
hardware: - aha2940 - scsi cdrom (no other device on scsi bus) - eide disk (quantum fireball) - asus sp3 board (4PCI, 1VLB, 3ISA) the chips are labelled: SiS 85C496 9511 NV (C)(M)SIS'94 PFD3030
and
SIS 85C497 9509 NV (C)(M)SIS'94 PFD2830
how to crash:
dd if=/dev/scd0 of=/dev/null
then log in on a different VC, do some work. log in on another console, do some work ... ls -laR / might help to make the bug come up more quickly.
soon you'll get { hda irq timeout } { Seek Complete Error }
resetting ide0
etc...
which occassionally will lead to a FS corruption.
I'll changed the board now (GA5486AL) with ALI chipset (4PCI, 4ISA) and the problem went away. however, I'm still able to crash the machine, but now less frequently and in a different way. I'll probably report later.
/herp
