The alternative, of course, is to leave your machine switched on. Your hardware will be very grateful for it, too...
Seriously: neat idea, but a little bit impractical. The amount of state information in a running Linux system with lots'a'hardware and some 40Mb of virtual memory in use (quite common if running X) is just too much.
(I like the idea, however :-))
