Hmm. A random idea here, and not quite related to what you're talking about: A /proc/version file that contains version information for each type of file, something like:
filesystems 1.0 kcore 1.0 net/ 1.0 net/arp 1.0
etc.
Or maybe that should be a /proc/versions/ directory which mimics the exact structure of the /proc directory except that every file only contains the version number of the code that is providing that file.
