Are you running sysklogd 1.3? I got the same problem with this release on an older kernel (1.3.85) with libc 5.2.18. Both root login and su root write a line to the syslog so it could be related.
In my case running 'strace su -' showed that it hung in the 'socket_subcall' syscall.
