I just ran into a similar problem with dvips. After upgrading the libs,
etc for the 1.3.9x kernels, I now get the following for dvips:

bridger:/home/wanger/tex/corr> dvips dircorr.dvi
Got a new papersize
This is dvipsk 5.58a Copyright 1986, 1994 Radical Eye Software
Segmentation fault

Is this the fault of the new libs or what? Also is there a fix for this,
I really need to get my LaTeX up a running again.
