All good ideas, but I never liked the name "vmlinux"; it's "zImage-1.3.95" (for example) for me.
BTW: HP-UX 10 has it's kernel in /stand/ together with the configuration file. Shouldn't Linux add "/config-1.3.95" when a kernel is installed? An other thing is the system map...
