If you have lots of spare time, you could revive IFS (ALPHA/ifs on
tsx-11.mit.edu), which kind of does what you want (plus a few other
useful things) ;-)

(I've stopped developing IFS about 2.5 years ago when I realized that it
was simply getting too bloated and virtually impossible to maintain due
to zillions of internal kernel dependencies.)
