Hello,
I am almost sure you are using Slackware 3.0.0. I was having the same
problem when I was using the Slackware distribution 3.0.0 and the moment I
am using something else but I solved the problem then by getting the lilo
package from the net. I compiled and installed it and then my problems were
solved. I think it has something to do with something in the slackware
distribution.
Hope this will help you.

-Chris
