Apparently minix fs isn't exclusive to Minix either :-)

I disagree. The length of the name is just fine; it's the '2' that's
causing problems for Linux first-timers. "ext" versus "ext2" etc. Cramming
all the filesystem names into three letters would be annoying and would
grate on the nerves. But, just for completeness I'll fill in a few blanks
for you:

Macintosh Hierarchical File System.

ofs = Old File System (Amiga). Would probably annoy a lot of the 68k
types...

Please, no. As a peace offering I give the world "newx", or maybe just
plain "new". (I would have suggested "nextfs", but who knows what sort of
confusion that would cause with NeXTstep veterans.)
