Found a couple of things. consolemap.c failed compilation at line 309:

uni_hash.tbl:102: redefinition of `dfont_unicount'
uni_hash.tbl:13: `dfont_unicount' previously defined here
uni_hash.tbl:138: redefinition of `dfont_unitable'
uni_hash.tbl:49: `dfont_unitable' previously defined here

The tables are duplicated in uni_hash.tbl. I removed duplicates, and
make completed.

Then a telnet session on local ether lan failed, dmesg reports:

SMP support enabled (works fine on 2.0.27). Prior to that, 2.1.14
uniprocessor TCP (telnet, ftp) worked. Software versions are:

binutils 2.7.0.3
ld.so 1.8.5
libc 5.4.13
modules 2.1.13
gcc 2.7.2
