SubjectConnections won't timeout

Summary:

Connections to my machine that were cut off by my box losing it's ppp
connection haven't timed out even after a few days.

My system:

fenris@ulfheim:~$ uname -a
Linux ulfheim 2.1.14 #1 Sun Dec 1 16:51:28 PST 1996 i586

Network connection consists of a 28.8 PPP dialup to an ISP.

The problem:

fenris@ulfheim:~$ netstat -tn
Active Internet connections (w/o servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp 0 0 204.216.64.180:1491 204.174.247.55:1136 CLOSE
tcp 0 0 204.216.64.180:1487 204.174.247.55:1134 CLOSE
tcp 0 0 204.216.64.98:21 204.180.142.36:1338 FIN_WAIT2

Some of these connections are three or four days old, and still haven't
timed out. Shouldn't they have, by now? And how can I clear them without
resetting the machine, BTW?
