OK, solved the mystery behind my memory problems. I finally figured out that something had to be wrong in the bios settings... Waitstates was the first I thought of, but (surprised? not) this beautiful Plug'n'Pray-bios of Intel Endeavour doesn't allow them to be changed.
The last option I tried was something called "ISA LFB" (what is it?), which was set to 1MB. I disabled it and everything works. I'm confused.
