I have the same message archived, and have been using that patch on my news server since 2.0.16. It's now part of my standard patch-kit for 2.0.x, and is in the kernal on all my systems, though not used anywhere but the news server yet. I think one reason it's not in the mainstream 2.0.x kernel is that Theodore Ts'o has what may be a better one. One of these in the official 2.0.x kernel (I'd like to keep my servers off the bleeding edge for a while) would be quite nice.
