SubjectStrange utmp!! xterm doesn't always log

I am running 2.1.7 and first of all my machine mysteriously
crashed two days in a row while I was asleep.

jauderho ttyp1 :0.0 Tue Nov 5 00:05 - crash (1+10:40)
jauderho ttyp4 :0.0 Mon Nov 4 23:59 - crash (1+10:46)

Wierd. I am still tracking this down.

However I have noticed that my xterms do extremely strange things as far
as logging to wtmp and utmp. I currently have 3 xterms open and I get the
following

turtle%jauderho% finger
Login Name Tty Idle Login Time Office Office
Phone
jauderho Jauder Ho p1 Nov 6 23:24 (:0.0)
jauderho Jauder Ho *p3 Nov 6 23:24 (:0.0)
jauderho Jauder Ho p2 2 Nov 6 23:24 (:0.0)

turtle%jauderho% w
11:24pm up 12:41, 3 users, load average: 0.24, 0.09, 0.02
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
jauderho ttyp1 :0.0 11:24pm 1.00s 0.54s 0.07s w
jauderho ttyp3 :0.0 11:24pm 59.00s 0.43s 0.43s -csh
jauderho ttyp2 :0.0 11:24pm 53.00s 0.43s 0.43s -csh

which are fine but if I do a last -10

turtle%jauderho% last -10
jauderho ttyp3 :0.0 Wed Nov 6 23:24 still logged in
jauderho ttyp1 :0.0 Wed Nov 6 23:24 still logged in
reboot system boot Wed Nov 6 10:45
jauderho ttyp1 :0.0 Tue Nov 5 00:05 - crash (1+10:40)
jauderho ttyp4 :0.0 Mon Nov 4 23:59 - crash (1+10:46)
reboot system boot Sun Nov 3 18:32
jauderho ttyp1 :0.0 Sun Nov 3 18:17 - down (00:00)
jauderho ttyp2 :0.0 Sun Nov 3 18:17 - down (00:00)
jauderho ttyp3 :0.0 Sun Nov 3 18:17 - 18:17 (00:00)
reboot system boot Fri Nov 1 10:02

wtmp begins Fri Nov 1 10:01:53 1996

you will see that only TWO of the three ttys are registered... now if I
close the window that is ttyp2 and open a new xterm ,then close and open
the same window again, I get

turtle%jauderho% last -20
jauderho ttyp2 :0.0 Wed Nov 6 23:29 still logged in
jauderho ttyp2 :0.0 Wed Nov 6 23:29 - 23:29 (00:00)
jauderho ttyp3 :0.0 Wed Nov 6 23:24 still logged in
jauderho ttyp1 :0.0 Wed Nov 6 23:24 still logged in

which is now normal. This has been happening for some time and if someone
can shed some light on this, I would very much appreciate it.
