That being said, I suspect there's a lot we can do to be clever, such as the zero-copy I/O.
There sure is, and I've been discussing with alan how to do this with the best possible interface so that as many network cards as possible can benefit from it.
You can pseudo-page flip from user space on transmits even with an MTU < PAGE_SIZE.
