Subject2.1.8 breaks SMC 80x3 (?)

Hello, all.

Ever since I installed 2.1.8 (2.1.9 didn't fix the problem), my Ethernet
adapter (SMC 80x3, pretty old, bought when already used, without a manual,
so I can't tell exactly which one it is) won't work. (In 2.1.7 and 2.0.25,
it works fine).

I'm booting kernels with lilo set to
append="ether=5,0x320,0,0,eth0"

So it can't be an autoconfiguration problem; support is compiled in the
kernel (not as module).

I've installed normal TCP/IP in the kernel, and I've compiled IPv6 as
module.

LLaP
