FWIW, I've noticed the same "jerky" behavior here under 2.1.8. This extends to X applications running on a foreign host, too. Something's changed..
Also, BogoMips began reporting 104.something consistantly on a machine that all prior kernels (2.0.x and 2.1.x alike) measured as 119.34. This may be significant?
