okay, well, giving 2.1.6 a try, and it compiles, not all the modules do though, i'm trying to compile the cm206 driver as a module, and so it dies when trying to compile cdrom.o here's the error message
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.1/drivers/cdrom' gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.1/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fom it-frame-pointer -fno-strength-reduce -pipe -m486 -DCPU=486 -DMODULE -DMODVERSIO NS -include /usr/src/linux-2.1/include/linux/modversions.h -c -o cdrom.o cdrom. c cdrom.c: In function `register_cdrom': cdrom.c:67: warning: initialization discards `const' from pointer target type cdrom.c: In function `cdrom_ioctl': cdrom.c:309: warning: implicit declaration of function `verify_area' cdrom.c:309: `VERIFY_READ' undeclared (first use this function) cdrom.c:309: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once cdrom.c:309: for each function it appears in.) cdrom.c:309: warning: implicit declaration of function `copy_from_user' cdrom.c:315: `VERIFY_WRITE' undeclared (first use this function) cdrom.c:315: warning: implicit declaration of function `copy_to_user' make[2]: *** [cdrom.o] Error 1
also, ever since 2.1.0 i have been unable to boot using the 2.1.x kernels.
the problem comes down to my scsi adapter. it's a DTC3290 scsi adapter which uses the adaptec 1542 driver. during the boot up process it mounts the root partition /dev/sda1 fine but gets as far as filesystem checks when it aborts due to timeouts then it just keeps on trying to send resets, but gets continual timeouts is anybody else experiencing problems like this?
