I have been looking for a low cost flash solution for the kernel but so far no luck. The cheapest thing I have seen so far are the new "mini" cards from intel. These would still require an ISA or PCI interface which pushes the cost up quite a bit. PCMCIA flash disks are way to expensive. What I really want is a low cost flash simm to put right on the motherboard.
