I want to back up a PC hard disk as an image (not necessarily files, but configuration, MBR's, etc) [I'm running combinations of linux, freebsd, os/2, win95, winnt *).
Should I be able to (if I have valid media)
tar -czvf /net/someremote/host.tar.gz /dev/hda?
Would it make sense to write zeros on the whole disk so it compresses better?
