There was a thread about this (in fact, probably dozens of them) in c.o.l.advocacy some time back...I wish we'd finished with the issue there.
Linux on the Alpha is 64-bit (address space, etc.). Linux on almost every other platform is 32-bit. (I understand that Linux on the Ultra will be 64-bit, which will make it the first 64-bit OS for that hardware. Poor Sun.)
