Thanks for the enlightening discussion... (I never knew the difference).

If I do:


wc /dev/sda1

or something, will I flush out my buffer cache? If so, there is
some reason to have raw devices...

Thinks like tar with the -W flag required special hacks to verify correctly
and read the physical media instead of the buffer cache, this may go away with
raw devices...
