This is not surprising at all. This tree is not a kernel tree, but rather a backport tree. It doesn't contain anything besides the Wifi stack and the backport code. It has no common commit with the Linux kernel. I understand that you fetched this tree from a kernel tree but that's not a good idea. Git will try to find a common ancestor but that will fail... after a huge number of tentatives. You'd better clone it.
