Regarding the __xxx ops i'm on two minds really. If there's a significant architecture that really cannot live without them (if it does not have the proper machine instructions _and_ local irq disabling is unreasonably expensive) then i guess we could (and should) add them.
Otherwise we should just try to be as simple as possible.
