$r = qr/a(??{ $r })?b/;
if ($s =~ /^$r$/) {
print "Yup, that's good\n";
} else {
print "fail\n";
}


$ perl foo.pl aabbbb
Not so much
$ perl foo.pl aaaabbbb
Yup, that's good
$ perl foo.pl aaaaabbbb
Not so much
