Ah, that worked, I was definitely re-using a directory I had built in before. I guess maybe it didn't figure out the dependency somehow.
so to repro (this is pseudo-git, i couldn't figure out how to test this without starting all over) git checkout v2.6.17 make O=../foo.obj all git checkout HEAD make O=../foo.obj all <boom>
