Thanks for the suggestions.

I now have

CONFIG_X86_GOOD_APIC=y
CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC=y
CONFIG_X86_UP_IOAPIC=y
CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=y
CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC=y

in my .config, and it doesn't make any apparent difference.
I haven't tried ACPI yet... maybe in a couple of days.
