do you have CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK and CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP
enabled? These are pretty good at e.g. catching illegal scheduling in
critical sections much earlier. You can enable them on !SMP kernels as
well.
