I concur. But you don't even need meta-characters to mess up the
whole system with a badly or just carelessly formatted
EXTRAVERSION. 

Imagine what may happen with something like:

EXTRAVERSION = -foo / # my homebrew -foo kernel

Maybe somewhat far-fetched ...
