On your suggestion I did use AGPMode 1 and 2. No difference.

The machine was stable in 2.5.30 - 2.5.40 timeframe, using DRI modules from DRI nightly builds on top of XFree 4.2 . Direct rendering was working as well.
I will try with the DRI modules again.
