SubjectRe: 2.5.56 won't boot (but 2.5.53 will)
Update: this problem is still in 2.5.57 and 2.5.58 kernels.

But I have some more info. At least with 2.5.58, the system
seems actually to be booting ... the problem is that the
console output (permedia2, of course without pm2fb) doesn't
work any more. The machine remains just as unusable (for most
of my purposes) as if it actually weren't booting.

That is, I can "ssh" into the machine. Or even type at
the console, log in, "startx" ... X11 comes up and is
usable, but if I exit and try to use the console normally
it's completely hopeless. Input, but no output.

The particular location of the "console isn't working any
more" problem seems likely to be the precise point where
the console would have to scroll the text that's already
been printed during boot (starting from Grub).

Got any suggestions about how to un-break the console?
