I wan't trying to state that it is GPL or similar, but the kernel driver source code IS available for free under a restrictive license. the GLX drivers are closed.

I can't comment on the stability in all configurations, but I've found them to work quite well with my box since 1.0 came out. the 0.9 serious were notorious for crashing though.
