Um, this is subject to the same problem as /lib/modules/<version>/config
I do "make bzlilo modules_install" and forget about it.
Two months later I look in /lib/modules/<version>/config and it's wrong. I look in /boot/vmlinuz -- that's wrong too.
Simple tiny solution: /proc/config.md5
