Alan, Am I being stupid, illiterate, or just missing something fundamental? Netfilter was only introduced in 2.3.18, so why did 2.2 and its linking ever come into the equation, since there was never a backport and 2.2 isn't really ever going to be a concern? Apologies for my stupidity, buuuutttt ...
