Sorry about that. New to this reporting stuff (obviously.) Please somebody help me if you can...
In response to Mr Larsson's teachings I present the following:
1) short: kswapd v1.7 dereferences a NULL pointer during boot of linux-2.4.0-test5 2) long description: same. (its a simple oops during boot) Just a couple of notable items: I did *not* compile the kernel with high-mem support. All output included here is generated on the exact same machine rebooted with the linux-2.2.16-8 kernel provided with RedHat rawhide. compiler is gcc 2.96 on this machine. 3) keywords: linux-2.4.0-test5, test5, kswapd, NULL 4) kernel version: linux-2.4.0-test5 5) oops output:
Unable to handle NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000 printing eip: c0117164 *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0000 CPU: 0 EIP: 0010:[<c0117164>] EFLAGS: 00010092 eax: c14a6000 ebx: 00000023 ecx: 00000000 edx: c021b538 esi: 00000000 edi: c14a6222 ebp: c14a7fcc esp: c14a7fa4 ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss:0018 Process kflushd (pid: 3, stackpage=c14a7000) Stack: 00000000 c011cd6d 00000246 00000000 c14bdf48 c14a6000 00000023 c14a6000 c14a6000 c14a6222 0008e000 c0109300 c14bdf3c ffffffff c14a6000 c01abd17 00000f00 c14bdf70 c01318a0 c0108c2b c14bdf3c 00000078 c01ebfc0 Call Trace: [<c011cd6d>] [<c0109300>] [<c01abd17>] [<c01318a0>] [<c0108c2b>] Code: 8b 01 89 45 dc 21 d8 a9 df ff ff ff 0f 84 f8 00 00 00 8b 55
Sorry but I tried resolving this spaghetti with ksymoops but got this instead:
[root@stingray linux]# ksymoops -v /usr/src/linux/vmlinux -K -o /lib/modules/2.4.0-test5 -L < /home/jeff/oops ksymoops 0.7c on i686 2.2.16-8. Which didn't seem too useful since it looks like ksymoops dies for some reason. but doing this...
cat - > debug.c << EOF char str[] = "\x8b\x01\x89\x45\xdc\x21\xd8\xa9\xdf\xff\xff\xff\x0f\x84\xf8\x00\x00\x00\x8b\x55"; main(){} EOF
gcc -g debug.c

I think that probably helps more for somebody. I can't make much sense of it. except that is looks like a conditional test. I mean how many conditional tests could possibly be in the kernel?? ;-)
I can not provide a shell script (occurs during boot before file systems get mounted)
Here's the "environment" that I can give you...
