i'm providing this to to l-k and opensound to help the responsible party hammer out the bug or maybe even help the other party hammer out the bug. thanks.
short: kernel BUG at slab.c:1031 running 2.4.0-test4 with oss 3.9.3n maestro 3 drivers.
long: i get this error usually right after playing a sound, but that is as predictable as it gets. sometimes it happens right at login when the window manager noises play, other times it'll run 8 hours without a problem. this error is consistent though. it never errors while playing sound only after i've quit. i'm contacting both oss and linux-kernel. i've been seeing this problem since at least 2.4.0-test2. also, every couple times i load the drivers, the sound will be noisy and unintelligible. unload and reload fixes.

reproduction: most commonly, play mp3s with xmms 1.2.1 through esd, pause or stop play, leave idle for anywhere from 2 minutes to an entire night, look at logs to see that it oopsed usually within 2 minutes of playing the last sound (signified by the messages about the buffer underruns).
