make mrproper /* you may want to save your .config file first */
make menuconfig
make dep

mkdir /kernelarchive
cp -puR /boot /kernelarchive/
cp -puR /lib/modules/2.x.x-y.y /kernelarchive

/* This is for backup, if you are cautious. You can always delete it later. */

rm -Rf /lib/modules/2.x.x-y.y

insert the boot disk in /dev/fd0
make bzdisk /* To test system first. */
/* This is really not necessary, but wise */

make modules
make modules_install

cd /boot
rm -f System.map
cd /usr/src/linux-2.x.x
cp -pf System.map /boot/System.map-2.x.x-y.y
cd /boot
ln -s System.map-2.x.x-y.y System.map

put 'boot=/dev/fd0' in /etc/lilo.conf to replace 'boot=/dev/whatever'

make sure the boot disk is in /dev/fd0

/sbin/lilo

reboot! /* assuming everything works... */

put 'boot=/dev/whatever' in /etc/lilo.conf

rm -f /boot/vmlinuz
cp -pf arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.x.x-y.y
cp -pf vmlinux /boot/vmlinux-2.x.x-y.y

reboot!

You may find it necessary to recompile your kernels. You should
always preserve your .config files. You can load them into
menuconfig as a starting point. You may also just use 'make clean'
which will preserve your .config file as well.
