I also need to add that I got the same error with the SHA glue file.
After disabling both MD5 and SHA, the kernel built. However, it broke
parport:

erwin:/home/jgoerzen# modprobe parport
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/parport.o: unresolved symbol enable_irq
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/parport.o: unresolved symbol disable_irq
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/parport.o: unresolved symbol strlen
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/parport.o: unresolved symbol strncpy
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/parport.o: unresolved symbol strncmp
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/parport.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/parport.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/parport.o: insmod parport failed
